Square - Street - Home
Entry hall renovation, Youth Hostel Proteus
Postojna, Slovenia, 2013
Three program areas:
square - street - home.
Pupils choose their own social and learning environment.
The existing multi-storey building student home, built in 1980, is also a youth hostel and a school library. The entry hall of the student house serves as a common area used for different exhibitions, events and meetings that help create a unique high school climate.
The concept of student home space is divided into three program areas: square, street and home. Entry hall represents a public square, hallway represents a public street, and parallel space is a metaphor for home. The existing space is cleansed to minimum, leaving only the construction. The so called program frames are then added to the emptied space. Program frames are independent elements enabling different programs to take place, programs such as resting, studying, games and art, but at the same time also serve as a reception, information counter and computer nook.
